In the early 1900s when many of
the Gaelic-speaking Highlanders were being enticed by offers of work in
Glasgow (and their agricultural efforts were under continuing pressure),
they would often meet under the railway bridge which crossed Argyle
Street as it went into Central Station. With Glasgow's reputation for a
high rainfall, the area soon became known as the "Hielanman's Umbrella"
and the name has remained to this day.
In recent
years, the viaduct has been restored and repainted and the shops on each
side of the street have been encouraged to spruce themselves up too.
