George Reid Ellis' migration to Canada

From Dad January 2018:  My father, George Reid Ellis migrated, From Bo'ness Scotland via
Greenock and Quebec on the SS Montcalm to the Clegg family at 44 South Alma St Guelph (near Toronto) in Nov 1929.
He went back to Bo'ness West lothian Scotland, some few years later as the World depression set in.

At the time he worked at GILSON Manufacturing; Guelph; Ontario; Canada) manufacturing electric ironing boards,washing machines, fridges. Mr Clegg worked there as well. I thought that the Cleggs were relatives but am informed that they are not. They were English.
As a boy-about 5yr old plus, I remember him telling us laddies stories of the wolf kept in a cage at the back of the plant. Dad is mentioned in the Vernon's Directories for 1930-31.
Can anyone give me info on Gilson's?Also off Cleggs/44 Alma St/menagerie etc
He also went to Prince Edward Island on holiday
What were the vernon Directories. And are there similar Directories inother Canadian Provinces eg PEI?
I have information from Ted Finch and Michael Palmer of the Ships Lists. But where would the ship dock in Quebec. Is the dock still there? And where would he have been most likely to catch a ship back to Scotland, assuming he may have gone from either Guelph or PEI?

ELLIE and I when we drove across Canada, some 20-25 years ago, visited the lady, who was the daughter of the owner of Gilson’s.
We spent a very enjoyable day speaking with her, going some more info for the family history that Maw started me on, as i didn’t know very much,  and didn’t want my family to meet a blank wall when asked family questions as are always the case.

My Dad, George Reid Ellis, went to Canada in 1930s??and worked at Gilson’s of Guelph at his trade as an iron fitter, on Stoves, refrigerators et al

Dad, remarked on the fact that we in Scotland did not have such luxury goods as he was working on. I think that he meant, mainly refrigerators.

HE RETURNED WHEN THE ONSET OF THE 1930’S DEPRESSION SET IN. HIS REASONING WAS THAT IN SCOTLAND HE COULD AT LEAST GET A BOWL OF SOUP AND A BED TO SLEEP IN

In our ellis household we didn;t get A FRIDGE TIL AFTER I STARTED WORK IN 1958 at all
