Aye, Scots grannies were "the Bees Knees" for Aussie Wains. She spoilt you wains.

MAW'S MIGRATION STORY- WRITTEN BY G ELLIS
- 2ND CHILD OH 4-TAE OOR MAW- THE BEST MAW OH AW TIME

When Our Dad died, Maw couldn’t get word to us from Scotland[as Britain was enduring a massive mail strike.
However, a neighbour of Maw’s, some 4 houses along at No23?? Gateside Avenue, Mrs McFarlane, had a daughter, Jean?? ,who was a nursing sister in the British army, stationed in Germany. Jean took a letter from Maw and posted it from Germany to us Ellis’s at 21 Queen St Beaconsfield.

After receiving Maw’s letter, from Germany, the postal strike ended and Ellie and I rang Maw, to ask her if she would like to come out to us, and she would have to stay for 2 years else we would have to pay back the cost of the fare. Maw ‘shouted’ ‘Yes’ . Hence a long life for Maw in Sydney and Kurri and Wangie and Tamworth and Moree and Sydney Harris Park, and trips to US –Charleroi Pensylvania To Ron and Jeanette Whyle[ms polland- [Ellie’s sister]-Los Angeles-Canada[With son John and john came to Sydney when Maw came back form OS-They went to NZ.
back to Scotland. As well as with us Ellises, depending upon where we were at a specific time period, til we bought our house at 12 Haven St Merrylands, where son in law, John Nash, designed a Grannie flat, which gave us all our own space to live.
Thankyou family for all of the above- and much more for looking after, ‘The Hielan Grannie’, as my mate, Darby Munro called Maw.

Eliza Ellis ms FORREST-MIGRATION to Sydney under the Gough Whitlam Labor Government-‘Family Reunion Program.'
This program of Gough’s recognised that many migrants returned to their home country due to ‘HOMESICKNESS’ IE MISSING THEIR LOVED ONES IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY.
GOUGH RADICALLY ALTERED ALL OF THIS BY MAKING IT EASIER FOR PARENTS AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THEIR PARENTS COUNTRIES WOULD STEM THIS NEGATIVE FLOWBACK DUE TO HOMESICKNESS. IT WORKED, AS GRANNY ELLIS CAME OUT AND STAYED UNTIL HER DEATH IN 24 JUNE 2000, AFTER GOING BACK ON ANOTHER RETURN HOLIDAY SCOTLAND. Maw arrived 21 Nov. 1971 and died 24 June 2000- total of 29 yrs. of absolute pleasure for Maw and all of us Ellis’s in Australia-Dianne-Cameron-Megan-Lisa and husband John, as well as my wife, Eleanor and myself-George F Ellis.

A great deal of the credit for Maw’s transition from being a ‘tired, worn out 'auld wummin,’ when she arrived on the ship to being a very classy, well dressed and well healthy being, was the great love and kindness of my lovely wife Eleanor in taking Maw shopping and for fitting of clothes and other up to date fashion items that made Maw feel like she was able to afford having money spent on her by her Family in Australia as well as in Scotland on her many trips home. Much of Maw’s success was always her big smile and efforts to help others, which was reciprocated in ‘spades’ by the recipients.
Maw had almost a third of her life in Australia knowing a luxury of exotic as well as practical Australian gardening, bolstered by her great Scottish expertise and living here in Australia as well as when she went back to Scotland.

Maw was a ’Gardener’s Gardener. She was practical, making and taking cuttings as well as being asked by lesser gardeners, ‘how do your grow that Liza?’  Practice and patience and asking advice from others was a hall mark of all good gardeners. Maw did all of these, as well as listened, to other gardeners as well as going to gardener clubs as well as experimenting on the best places and soil to plant. Maw, especially liked talking and listening to her Granddaughter, Lisa Nash’s Husband, John. John is a very keen gardener and Maw learned much by listening to his expertise, as well as gaining some from maw.
VALE, our lovely Maw. The kindest gentlest person to walk the planet, adored by all of her family and the many friends maw made all over the world on her visits to and from Scotland-USA [Jeanette and Ronnie Whyel and Craig and Danny and Daniel.
Maw, left Southampton on 21 Nov 1971, Arriving at Circular Quay [on opera House side] Sydney Harbour, AUS 19 Dec 1971 on the MV Australis via Los Palmas and Cape Town due to the Suez Canal being closed. Approx. one-month voyage-NB-See fully transcribed official version on GFE’S MACBOOK AIR [13JULY 2017]
Maw was a Church Of SCT-Presbyterian
